At Valparaiso University, we don't have any restrictions on food or drink in any of our computer labs. The biggest public lab areas are in the Library, and there's actually a coffee shop on the first floor of the building. When the building was built, administration determined that there was a bigger risk from people sneaking in food or drink and inadvertently spilling, as opposed to allowing people the opportunity to be open with their food & drink.
To my knowledge, we've never lost any equipment in any public labs due to someone spilling on it. Faculty & staff are allowed to have food & drink in their offices (where there is also computing equipment) and I'm not aware of any catastrophes that way either.
