We generate a page like this using data from our Altiris server. A
ColdFusion page queries the Altiris database to determine if someone
is logged in or not. You could also do this with KeyServer if you are
using that on your campus already.
There have been several discussions of this topic on the Lab Manager
list: http://listserv.uark.edu/archives/labmgr.html
The most recent I found in my archives was from June 2010 and several
other solutions were mentioned there. The LabMgr list is a great
resource if you're managing computer labs.
