Thank you for the responses, everyone, they've been very helpful!

Sherwin -- I definitely agree on how immediately knowing someone's name helps ease interactions. Right now, we have a situation where the tech knows the student's name immediately (from the trouble ticket), but if they forget to introduce themselves, this can exacerbate an already unbalanced relationship between tech and customer.

Eric -- Definitely nothing strange about one's dress changing one's frame of mind. Nearly every religious and fraternal organization, as well as athletic team and professional setting, has a uniform that helps get everyone "in the moment". We are strongly considering turning our move-in shirt into a de facto uniform, which would hopefully also stop students from asking me "What's your major?" :-(

Subject: Re: [RESNET-L] Name tags for student employees?

We began forcing name badges on our non-RCC staff this summer for much of the same reasons mentioned. (RCCs must wear the "official t-shirt" during Freshman Arrival, other than that there is no dress-code or ID requirements for RCCs). We have many student staff whose job requirements has them wandering about campus into both opened and closed residences and walking off with expensive technology. For our Desk staff I anticipate more resistance come Fall. (Resistance is futile).

From experience I believe it does help with customer interactions- The Stanford community is fairly laid-back and and supportive across the board (from my perspective anyway). Immediately knowing someone's name will add to that culture. In order to appear diplomatic about the whole thing, we gave the students the opportunity to submit design concepts. The winning design has been adopted and the the student won a Jamba Juice GC. (FYI- We produce our name badges in-house, and yes, it's a pretty clunky process.)

Hope that helps!

We have used them for about two years with no adverse effects. It really helps, also, when we send students out to do simple jobs such as plugging in an Ethernet cable or restarting a projector in a classroom. This way the faculty/staff person knows they are associated with us by more than just their word.

At our main location, they have their names on individual tags and at the satellite locations, there is a generic "ITS Help" tag that they share. We find that identifying them as staff makes them much more approachable, whether the name is there or not. It also provides a little authority in case they need to enforce rules.

I can pass you the name of our supplier off list if you wish. The cost comes down to about 5 bucks per tag and they look pretty good. They use magnetic clasps so clothing isn't damaged.

Additionally, we have name badges with branded lanyards that they are required to wear if they are at a service point or going out to an appointment. We've found it helps with a number of things:

It sounds strange, but since we started requiring the students to wear the button up, more professional shirts there has been a distinct increase of professionalism from our students and a higher expectation by the customers. It makes them feel like a professional, not a student during those times.

We also have a mandatory dress code for desktop technicians - must wear a collared \ polo shirt. No T-shirts - we found students would push limits with offensive shirts.

I have no real intention of implementing this (...yet?), but I am curious if any of you have your student employees wear name tags, and if you believe it helps with customer interactions.
