Team,
Darn happy to assist. Below is a high level overview of the students that =
work in the computer labs here at RIT..................... I hope this hel=
ps.

=B7 How many student workers Information Technology at your institu=
tion employs?
175+ (in computer labs) approx. 20 managed labs

=B7 What is the size of your school?
18K total student enrollment

=B7 What incentives exist for your student workers in terms of prom=
otions?
Increases in rate of pay + promotions to leadership student positions (ie: =
head labbie, office coverage, trainer, etc...) We also have student co-op =
positions on campus and we use our student lab workers as testing grounds f=
or the co-op positions.

=B7 What is the salary structure for your student employees?
Students start at minimum wage, they are evaluated at the end of each quart=
er. We combine the score & length of service to obtain a numerical value. =
If the student meets a minimum score they are available to be "considered=
" for an increase. Supervisor level "student positions" are available afte=
r 2 years of service. Typically a $1/hr. increase for students supervisor =
positions.

=B7 If there is a standard campus salary at your institution? If th=
ere is, what is it?
There are 5 different levels depending on the positions. Each level has a =
high & low range.

=B7 What other benefits and perks do your students receive by worki=
ng with you?
Our students receive the joy of our supervision.

Apologize in advance for any cross postings.....the following is sent on be=
half of one of my staff who is looking for information from other instituti=
ons regarding IT student Staffing. Any information that you can provide us=
regarding your student programs would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance...

Bill Thieke

Hello,
I am trying to conduct an informal survey about students that work for Info=
rmation Technology in higher education institutions. We have been trying to=
restructure our program for a number of years. We have around 25 students =
that provide classroom support and staff the service desk serving faculty, =
staff, and students. Currently, our program provides almost no room for ad=
vancement; all students enter at the same level (minimum wage) and stay at =
the same level throughout their time with us. We have the added barrier of =
not being able to pay our student workers at a higher rate than other work-=
study positions on campus. Essentially our students are required to perfor=
m more advanced tasks and require significantly more training than most oth=
er positions on campus but they make the same amount of money as the person=
checking ID cards at the gym. We are trying to collect information from ot=
her institutions in order to build a proposal for restructuring our program=
and potentially presenting our case to the student wage committee.

The information that we are interested in gathering would be:

=B7 How many student workers Information Technology at your institu=
tion employs?

=B7 What is the size of your school?

=B7 What incentives exist for your student workers in terms of prom=
otions?

=B7 What is the salary structure for your student employees?

=B7 If there is a standard campus salary at your institution? If th=
ere is, what is it?

=B7 What other benefits and perks do your students receive by worki=
ng with you?
We would really appreciate any information that you are willing to provide =
us with. Our students have great potential, but they as well as we are left=
frustrated by our inability to provide them with continuing incentives to =
grow as employees. A majority of our students do not major in technical are=
as so many of them will not continue in the technology field. We feel as th=
ough we need to provide some incentive to keep them interested in working f=
or us.
Thank you,

Carrie Carpenter

in technical areas so many of them will not continue in the technology fie=
ld. We feel as though we need to provide some incentive to keep them intere=
