I tell my students to ask a lot of questions, starting with the basics and
building up from there. Questions to ask:
Are there any error messages? If so, what do they say?
Can it be reproduced after reboot?
Is it plugged in?
Is it turned on?
The ability to troubleshoot is a skill that's tough to teach in a short
class. It's something learned over long periods of time, in my experience.
I would love to see what others do as well. I have the benefit (I'm
staying positive here) of having almost an entirely new staff next year.
So I can teach them all without having pre-conceived notions.
