Hi all,
I will share how we utilize Twitter and Facebook. We have a few accounts.
1. Facebook - Please promise you will " Like" us when you check out=
our page since I would like to have over 600 Fans. :) It is been at 59=
7 for a while. We have one account for our Tech Spot Computer Service a=
nd one page for Information Service.
a. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/ksutechspot
You will see a few comments from users appreciating our work. Last year, =
we give out prizes to attract fans.
b. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/informationservices - mostly o=
utage and change announcement.
2. Twitter - We use a twitter account differently even though we =
are posting outages and upcoming changes but users don't have to follow=
us - they just need to go to our support portal - announcements are posted=
in our portal page with Twitter api (see the black box in http://support=
.kent.edu ) which will also post to our Facebook ( link b. above) since =
it is easier to post info even during non-working hours and will not be hin=
dered by the campus network. We have about 120 follower but it is not ne=
cessary to follow us to see the outages or announcements. http://twitter.=

Thanks for the numbers. They confirm my suspicions about Twitter, which is =
that it gets a lot of press/hype, but almost nobody actually uses it. I thi=
nk celebrities and the newsmedia keep Twitter on the 'front page', but in '=
real life', people aren't really buying-in. It would seem Facebook is much =
more robust and reaches a much larger audience; I still can't imagine anyon=
e wanting to subscribe/friend something like a computer lab or campus netwo=

Hi,
We have also been looking into the integration of Facebook/Twitter as a mea=
ns of communication to our students regarding the network. However, the onl=
y uses I can come up with is when we need to advertise an outage. We do hav=
e the means to make most of this automatic with our monitoring tools, but p=
art of my thinks that having a dedicated Twitter account for this screams u=
nreliability. We manage the Halls internet, so first year students would be=
our audience. Can anyone else think of a more positive use of Twitter in t=
his case?

Subject: Re: Facebook and Twitter use
We have not used Facebook, but do use Twitter - (http://www.twitter.com/GWU=
STS). I can't say we use it extremely often, but we like it to get informat=
ion out and use it to let people know about service issues.
1. Did you have issues getting the account up and running?
None whatsoever. I did run it by our central IT communications guru first f=
or approval.
2. Have you continued to use it?
Yes. Though somewhat off and on as we see issues or think we could reach so=
meone
3. How have you dealt with "You guys/my network/this school is terrib=
le/sucks/etc" messages posted to Facebook or Twitter?
We see them constantly and ignore them. In some cases we see folks who seem=
to have real problems "Gosh, I'm right in the middle of this paper and GWi=
reless keeps dropping". In those cases we might tweet 'at' them and say "He=
y, see you're having problems, stop by the basement in the library and we c=
an help!"
4. What sort of information have you put out there?
Mostly outages, information about new services, where to get help, little s=
ecurity tips.
5. <This space reserved for anything else you may think of>
The best thing I've found is to set up TweetDeck with a bunch of columns th=
at are custom searches. This lets you start tracking issues, service launch=
es, and just raw feelings about an issue. For example, we do like "GWU wire=
less" "GWU technology" "GWU STS" "GWU resnet" "gwu cable" and the like.

I'm looking for input from other universities and colleges who have attempt=
ed to use Facebook and Twitter to maintain communication with your students=
.
1. Did you have issues getting the account up and running?
I did have to ask my PR guy for help in how to setup a "page".
2. Have you continued to use it?
Every few months I post something on it. If I had any friends I would do m=
ore with the page.
3. How have you dealt with "You guys/my network/this school is terrib=
le/sucks/etc" messages posted to Facebook?
Very few people have seen my page so I have no messages like these.
4. What sort of information have you put out there?
IT info regarding Fall Orientation, Spring Orientation, pictures of our par=
ties w/ our student interns, used the account to "like" a facebook page our=
intern created for a XtraNormal workshop they hosted on campus.
5. <This space reserved for anything else you may think of>
I originally created this page so I could list it on the new letter we send=
to incoming students. I thought if they had questions they would refer th=
em to our facebook account. I've received NONE. Right now my only followe=
rs or "likers" are current IT staff or student interns. Hopefully next yea=
r will be better.
Some example pages would be good as well. At the moment, our web presence c=
an be worked on and this seems like a simple way to go about it.
