Our Facebook account automatically pushes all posts to Twitter, so we
only post to Facebook. =20

=20

FYI I pulled data today from a student tech use survey. At Evergreen
80% of our students use Facebook a few times a week or more (65% daily),
with only 11% using Twitter a few times a week or more (7% daily).
MySpace trails even LinkedIn with only .9% using it a few times a
week...

Hi,=20

=20

We have also been looking into the integration of Facebook/Twitter as a
means of communication to our students regarding the network. However,
the only uses I can come up with is when we need to advertise an outage.
We do have the means to make most of this automatic with our monitoring
tools, but part of my thinks that having a dedicated Twitter account for
this screams unreliability. We manage the Halls internet, so first year
students would be our audience. Can anyone else think of a more positive
use of Twitter in this case?

We have not used Facebook, but do use Twitter -
(http://www.twitter.com/GWUSTS). I can't say we use it extremely often,
but we like it to get information out and use it to let people know
about service issues.

=20

1. Did you have issues getting the account up and running?

None whatsoever. I did run it by our central IT communications guru
first for approval.

2. Have you continued to use it?

Yes. Though somewhat off and on as we see issues or think we could reach
someone

3. How have you dealt with "You guys/my network/this school is
terrible/sucks/etc" messages posted to Facebook or Twitter?

We see them constantly and ignore them. In some cases we see folks who
seem to have real problems "Gosh, I'm right in the middle of this paper
and GWireless keeps dropping". In those cases we might tweet 'at' them
and say "Hey, see you're having problems, stop by the basement in the
library and we can help!"

4. What sort of information have you put out there?

Mostly outages, information about new services, where to get help,
little security tips.

5. <This space reserved for anything else you may think of>

The best thing I've found is to set up TweetDeck with a bunch of columns
that are custom searches. This lets you start tracking issues, service
launches, and just raw feelings about an issue. For example, we do like
"GWU wireless" "GWU technology" "GWU STS" "GWU resnet" "gwu cable" and
the like.

I'm looking for input from other universities and colleges who have
attempted to use Facebook and Twitter to maintain communication with
your students.

1. Did you have issues getting the account up and running?

I did have to ask my PR guy for help in how to setup a "page".

2. Have you continued to use it?

Every few months I post something on it. If I had any friends I would
do more with the page.

3. How have you dealt with "You guys/my network/this school is
terrible/sucks/etc" messages posted to Facebook?
Very few people have seen my page so I have no messages like these.

4. What sort of information have you put out there?

IT info regarding Fall Orientation, Spring Orientation, pictures of our
parties w/ our student interns, used the account to "like" a facebook
page our intern created for a XtraNormal workshop they hosted on campus.

5. <This space reserved for anything else you may think of>

I originally created this page so I could list it on the new letter we
send to incoming students. I thought if they had questions they would
refer them to our facebook account. I've received NONE. Right now my
only followers or "likers" are current IT staff or student interns.
Hopefully next year will be better.

Some example pages would be good as well. At the moment, our web
presence can be worked on and this seems like a simple way to go about
it.

After viewing Rizzo's Providence page I see I was missing some pertinent
information about my department. I'll have to work on that. Thanks :)
