We=92ve got a lot of exciting news for you this week, including the
announcement of our Keynote Speaker!
Keynote Speaker: Marc Canter
We=92re happy to announce that the Keynote speaker for this year=92s confer=
ence
will be Marc Canter. Marc has a long history in the technology industry, an=
d
is considered one of the founders of multimedia. In 1984, he founded
MacroMind, the company that later became MacroMedia and produced the world=
=92s
first multimedia player (now known as Flash) and the first multimedia
authoring tool (now known as Adobe Director).
After leaving MacroMedia, he consulted for many leading technology companie=
s
such as Sony, Fujitsu, NEC, JVC, Intel, Apple, and Microsoft, and was
involved in many interactive and multimedia projects. In the 2000s, he was
involved in the design of some of the earliest social networks (including
Tribe.net, aSmallWorld, 1UP, and others). In 2005, he founded Broadband
Mechanics, a company that builds tools and helps groups enable online
communities, with a focus on open social networking.
His latest project, Digital City Mechanics, is focused on the creation of
=91Digital Cities=92. Digital City Mechanics utilizes technology and commun=
ity
building to train people for high-tech jobs, thus spurring innovation and
the creation of new companies and new jobs.
In addition to his work in business, Marc is also a proponent of open-sourc=
e
software and an advocate for user=92s rights in Social Networks (such as
ownership and control of personal data, and the freedom to access it.)
After his Keynote Speech on Saturday, Marc will also be holding two smaller
breakout sessions focusing on topics such as creating online
communities/open social networks, and assisting others in creating
multimedia and using open data. These sessions will be scheduled as part of
the normal program sessions.
Early Registration Ends Friday!
Remember to register soon <http://www.regonline.com/942048>! Early
registration ends Friday, May 13th. After that, the cost of registration
increases to $600.
Silent Auction
As the Student Technology Conference nears, we hope you=92ll consider bring=
ing
an item to support this year=92s Silent Auction and the Senti-Merriman
Scholarship. This will be our third year holding the Silent Auction, and we
hope to continue the fundraising trend from last year. We more than doubled
the amount of money going into the Scholarship from the Auction, as well as
doubled the number donations, including some fantastic creative and geeky
items.
Past popular items include (but are most certainly not limited to!) externa=
l
hard drives, =93wifey=94-wifi finders, homemade creative items, music, them=
ed
gift baskets, art, gift cards and school-branded items. Are you in a band?
Donate a CD! Are you (or a friend) =93crafty=94? How about giving us a hand=
made
piece of jewelry, picture frame, or scarf. Maybe you=92re a good baker =96 =
we=92ll
totally take your homemade cookies.
To donate an item, please email Erin
Scott<erin.scott@yale.edu?subject=3DResNet%20Silent%20Auction>,
Silent Auction Coordinator. If you have questions, or need help coming up
with ideas, feel free to email her as well.
Program Session Highlights
The full list of program sessions will be available soon, but in the
meantime we wanted to highlight a couple of presentations to give you a
better idea of what topics ResNet presentations cover.
*Taking the Commons Concept to the Web: Building an Online Academic
Community*
Ken Panko, *Yale University*
Many campuses have made significant capital investments in learning commons
spaces with the goal of fostering communities around the thoughtful
coordination of academic and technology resources. However, we all know
students also inhabit the web. We should therefore consider how the online
environments we provide to students and faculty can be designed to have
similar ecological advantages for community building. We will take a look a=
t
some of the ideas being explored at Yale and elsewhere and open things up
for discussion so attendees can share their thoughts and examples.
*Management Systems: Letting the Barn Manage the Animals When the Farmer
Can=92t*
Nick Corduan, *Taylor University*
One of the tensions in most IT support departments is that managers are
rarely tasked with simply managing, and yet many of us are given fleets of
student workers to manage. How does a manager manage when the same manager
is supposed to be working on a project or trouble-shooting a PC? This
presentation will look at some of the systems I have put in place to reduce
management overhead with checklists, shared tasks, scheduling software and
other ways to keep work happening properly even when I=92m not available to
supervise. General suggestions will be made and remaining challenges
discussed.
Did you know=85?
Yale=92s library system contains over 12 million volumes, and is
second-largest academic library in the US.
