We moved our room condition forms all online three years ago. We use
laptops to access a home built Drupal/PGSQL web app with nearly all
predefined checkboxes and dropdowns (i.e. checkbox for "trash in small
bag: $6/bag" dropdown for number of bags), and a few text input fields.

We take pictures if the bill will be over $50, but we just have our
assessors carry a cheap digital camera and take a picture of the room
number on the door, pictures of room, then room number again. Images
are manually moved into dated folders on a network share to be used in
the event of billing appeal. We would like to improve this portion of
the system to something like what you describe.

=20

We'd like to move to tablets, but don't have wireless coverage in all
our room (we're working on that).

=20

Send me an email if you're interested in more details, I'd be happy to
share our table structure and drupal module code. I will say this was
not a simple implementation...

Subject: devices to do room conditions/maintenance/check-outs (tablets?)

Hello all,

We are exploring some options. Has anybody ever used hand-held digital
devices to do room conditions upon resident checkouts or maintenance
type of things? Similar to what TMA systems does.

We usually have a paper room condition form which has to be compiled
manually but we are getting inquiries if it's possible to have a
portable device that can:

1. Staff can enter room conditions (text input or pre-defined
drop-downs)
2. Take pictures of damaged items
3. Offline storage of data to be uploaded at the end of the day because
of limited wifi in buildings.

Tablets were considered but iPads are expensive and the Andriod tablet
market is fragmented. If somebody has a good android app and hardware
solution we'd consider it. We wouldn't buy 3G/4G data plans for the
devices.

Applications developed in-house on what platform?

I'm more inclined to have Windows convertable netbooks (Dell Inspiron
Duo, ASUS convertable tablet) and buy good USB HD webcams which take
decent stills in low light. We could have them connect via ethernet
after they get back to the maintenance shop and sync data w/ drop-box.
