What you are asking I think is how did we announce the conversion to 80.1x =
(which we used XpressConnect to help us with). The other question is how do=
we get people connected the first time.
We moved from an open, web authed SSID to 802.1x. We started warning people=
months in advance on the web auth page, and included a countdown timer tel=
ling them when the network would go away. We also pointed people to our SSI=
D set up just for config called AirOrangeHelp. This put them in another cap=
tive portal that provided info on to connect with a link to the xpressconne=
ct config tool. We also sent out emails, and announced on digital signage e=
tc. . For faculty and staff, we worked closely with the ITS people that sup=
port them to help them understand what was coming long in advance of the ch=
ange. In fact, we got input from them on the best timing to make the change=
.

For incoming students, we send them connection information in the mail. We =
also hand them instructions when they arrive at the residence. It is a ver=
y simple process that basically says go to the SSID and follow the instruct=
ions from there. Even though we have people to help in every residence duri=
ng opening, for the last two openings they were quite bored.

Our biggest problems have been Apple products. Quite often, Apple will rele=
ase a new OS that breaks something and causes all kinds of strange behavior=
. In their infinite wisdom, they often do this right before or during openi=
ng. But that is something out of our control and as I think someone pointed=
out earlier, not something that Apple really seems to care about.

For those schools who implemented XpressConnect, how did you announce/adver=
tise it to your faculty/staff/students?

Thanks,
