All,

Westminster College moved to DPM from BackupExec last fall and we're very, very happy with it. We back up VMware virtual machine with a traditional backup agent.

If you have to back up VMware virtual machines directly with DPM, you can also consider i365's EVault for DPM product (http://www.i365.com/products/data-backup-software/microsoft-backup-recovery/index.html). I have looked at it but don't have experience with it yet.

Hyper-V integration is very, very good in DPM 2010, too, as is Exchange and SharePoint support.

And, you're spot on that it requires a different mindset than traditional backup tools but once you get over that hurdle, it's great.

Scott

Our sysadmin tells me that DPM takes a little getting used to at first, but that once you have a handle on its nuances it is much simpler to use than Veritas and results in a higher backup success rate.  He is not sure about how well it works with VMware but I’m told that the integration with Hyper-V is excellent.
