Hi Joel,
We have one or two courtesy phones per building. These phones are POTS line=
s (not VOIP) so that they work even if a hurricane hits (this is South Flor=
ida....).
The phones we use are the cheap analog phones that are about $10.
Hardened phones costs about $300 and they can be destroyed also. So for the=
price of one hardened phone you can have 30 cheap phones.
So for about 20 phones the investment for hardened phones would have been $=
6000. That is a whole lot of vandalism of $10 phones.... We replace only 1 =
or 2 phones per semester.

Subject: Courtesy Phone Equipment
We've been working on reducing the number of telephone lines offered in stu=
dent rooms for the past couple of years, but are finally to the point where=
we get to start phasing them out completely. This will be a multi-year pr=
ocess as the income from our lines is linked into the financing plan for ou=
r fancy VoIP system.
It's been decided that there will be some courtesy phones in each building =
so there is something available in an emergency. Now we need to come up wi=
th the best solution to install. I am hoping that some folks may be able t=
o share what they are doing.
Here are some of our options:
* Go back to the good old days of cheap analog phones on the wall that =
we can easily replace if they get damaged.
* Install VoIP phones similar to what we have in offices.
* Use some sort of hardened phone with emergency button, similar to wha=
t we have outside front doors.
* Something else?
Also, how many of these do you think is "enough"? One per building? One pe=
r lounge? Per floor?
Thanks!
