The largest order was 3 years ago and we had about a month from the order being placed to needing the first truckload of computers on campus. HP had shipped the entire order to a third party contractor doing asset tagging for us within 1 week of placing the order. Every year we order about 100 faculty computers with an August 1st deadline, order is placed around June 30/July 1st and they have arrived 1-2 weeks before the deadline. We work very closely with our HP field sales rep on timing for several months during the process to ensure a smooth process.

We've also had our share of logistical issues with Dell and, while we're not actively looking for a change, we wouldn't mind knowing our alternatives.
Merlin, have you been able to do a large order with HP with a specific delivery date? If so, how was their performance on it?
Thanks!
Mike

We have been an HP shop for 3 years and do our own warranty work on an install base of aprox 6500 desktops and portables. We have used HP/Compaq servers for close to 15 years. Up until a year ago our orders went to a 3rd party, we have now switched to HP directly for orders and are happy with response time for orders and shipments. 3 years ago we ordered 5500 notebooks and 500 desktops and had the entire order within 2 weeks. We are getting ready for another mass order this spring and will be staying with HP.

All
Apologies for the cross-post. Most of our installed base is dual-boot Apple hardware, but for many years now we have standardized on Dell hardware for our Windows-only machines. Over the past couple of years we have grown increasingly unhappy with Dell's level of customer service, responsiveness to orders, adherence to time-tables, etc. We're thinking of jumping ship to another vendor.
Have you standardized on any non-Dell vendor? More importantly, are you happy with that vendor? We would be looking to purchase several standard types of machines, including low-end desktops, high-end workstations, and business laptops. It would be great if we could find a single vendor to provide all these.
If you have had bad experiences with any vendors other than Dell, that would be good to know too, so we can avoid those.
Thanks!
