For those institutions who are close to an Internet POP or carrier hotel th=
ere may be a mid-term ROI in getting a connection between your campus and t=
hat location and getting into the peering business. It certainly brings wi=
th it a higher level of complexity, involves core network engineering teams=
(which may or may not be part of your group) and doesn't help institutions=
in more remote areas but may be a conversation worth having.
Readers Digest version for those of you who don't know what I'm talking abo=
ut... if you have your own connection to a carrier hotel there are usually =
other ISP's or service providers there who will 'peer' with you which means=
to pass traffic directly between the two organizations with no cost (other=
than the router). Other companies will usually only do this if you can sh=
ow a significant amount of traffic between you and them but it can cut down=
on the amount of traffic on your paid for transit connections.
Are there people out there on this list with this sort of setup? Has anyone=
peered with Netflix?

We have seen a steady increase in bandwidth needs as well. We don't see tha=
t slowing down.
Cable Modem providers and FiOS can provide 10-50mbps and with DOCSIS 3.0, c=
able providers will be able to easily provide 100 mbps or more when they wa=
nt to. FiOS being fiber based could go even higher. You can buy a TV or Blu=
e Ray player today that plugs into the Internet and can stream Netflix or A=
mazon video in HD quality on a big screen.
There is also Roku, GoogleTV, AppleTV etc. Not to mention hulu, youtube etc=
.
We have found that at least in our area, the price of Internet bandwidth ha=
s been coming down some, the more volume you buy.
That has helped. We use packet shaping that has been fairly successful at s=
topping P2P which helps. We also have Akamai servers on campus that cache t=
he content that they service, and that has helped some too.

Subject: how do you handle streaming video?
Recently (this past fall), two changes were made to our bandwidth pipe.
1. We paid for an additional 100 mbps to add to the 200 mbps we were =
paying for.
2. Before this change, ResNet shared the whole commodity internet pip=
e with the rest of the campus (400 mbps); after this upgrade, we were limit=
ed to 300 mbps only.
What has changed so dramatically from last year that even our increased ban=
dwidth isn't near enough to handle the demand? Because we are hitting the 3=
00 mbps threshold every single day. Our network admins (my vendor, so to s=
peak) tell me that it is streaming video and p2p traffic. We had streaming=
video last year and p2p traffic. Unless they removed the shaping for p2p =
traffic, I can't see that that traffic should ramp up so significantly this=
year.
So what are other schools doing about this increased demand on their bandwi=
dth? Are you seeing this same, significant increase in demand? If nothing=
has changed for us from last year except for our increase in bandwidth, w=
hy does our service suck so much for our customers? Anyone?
