We have all HP Laserjets and Xerox machines on campus. We recently switched our print server to 2008. I'm not sure if it's 64 bit or not (I assume so). We had some driver issues in the switch. I know our server admins switched to all PCL 6 drivers. I think most have been reverted back to PCL 5 at this point due to some issues. Our users are primarily on XP 32 bit still.

Our labs are all on Pharos, completely separate from the other printers. We're on Windows 2008 RC2 64 bit there and using the HP universal driver PCL 5. It works fine on a variety of different printers (I can give you the list if you want, but I'd have to look up some of them).

Most of the Xerox machines on the regular print server (non-Pharos) had to be switched to the Xerox Global Postscript driver due to some issues. On Pharos, they're all the same device (we have 4 Xerox machines, all 7120's) using the device-specific driver. I will say this about Xerox support, though. It's not that great and kind of a pain. So would I recommend them? Maybe. They're nice machines if you've got good support.

Let me know if you want more information or specifics on anything. I can get it. I manage the Pharos server, but not the other print server. That's someone else in our department.

Subject: [RESNET-L] Non-HP Laser Printers

All,

We’ve recently been having fits with HP laser printer drivers now that our print server is Windows 2008 64-bit. The HP driver support for that platform is unreliable. We’re interested in considering alternative printer manufacturers, but we need business-grade laser printers and a line that scales from personal size to work-group printers.

What are you all using, particularly in lab situations?

We’re particularly interested if you’ve had experience with drivers in a Win 2K8 64-bit environment.

Thanks much,

NickC---
