We have a head end structure with fiber feeds to our residence halls. We
get our service from Campus Televideo and are delivering analog, digital SD
and digital HD to the students. We get our service off satellite and
off-air antennas pulling in local channels.

Subject: CATV and internet bandwidth
Greetings,
I've been asked to see what other locations are doing in terms of CableTV
and related internet bandwidth for students.
We currently have a head-end structure with rigid coax between buildings and
service from DirecTV. The equipment in place allows us to distribute an
analog signal in standard definition. We are looking to upgrade our setup,
and are considering several options. Does anyone still have a head-end
structure? Do you get service from the internet or satellite? If by
internet, then how much bandwidth is this consuming? Do you offer HD
services to students? Do you distribute internally via ethernet or coax?
I assume others, like us, have seen a rise in internet offerings such as
NetFlix and Hulu for student entertainment. Has this caused a noticeable
increase in traffic? Does anyone shape this traffic, only allow it during
certain times, or is your bandwidth sufficient enough to handle the traffic?
Any comments or insights would be appreciated.
Thanks!
James Ellis
