We recently (this past fall) de-commissioned our on-campus head-end and con=
tracted with Comcast to provide a feed with a combination of analog, digita=
l SD, and digital HD content. The content is broadcasted in clear QAM so n=
ot converter boxes are needed.
We only signed a three-year deal because we are watching closely where IP T=
V is going (both as a provided campus service and as students use commercia=
lly provided services via the campus backbone/Internet connection).

Greetings,
I've been asked to see what other locations are doing in terms of CableTV a=
nd related internet bandwidth for students.
We currently have a head-end structure with rigid coax between buildings an=
d service from DirecTV. The equipment in place allows us to distribute an a=
nalog signal in standard definition. We are looking to upgrade our setup, a=
nd are considering several options. Does anyone still have a head-end struc=
ture? Do you get service from the internet or satellite? If by internet, th=
en how much bandwidth is this consuming? Do you offer HD services to studen=
ts? Do you distribute internally via ethernet or coax?
I assume others, like us, have seen a rise in internet offerings such as Ne=
tFlix and Hulu for student entertainment. Has this caused a noticeable incr=
ease in traffic? Does anyone shape this traffic, only allow it during certa=
in times, or is your bandwidth sufficient enough to handle the traffic?
Any comments or insights would be appreciated.
