I am very interested in this topic and I think a lot of us are in the same =
place with our CATV technology...wanting to upgrade for HD services but uns=
ure if the expense is worth it for the long run. We have seen a definite n=
oticeable increase in our bandwidth consumption at peak times and I'm think=
ing that a lot of that traffic is streaming video. I'm not sure because we=
don't manage our shaper. I do know that we just upped our bandwidth by 10=
0 mbps (ResNet only) and our users have already consumed that upgrade.
What is the next big thing in TV? Are students/users going to continue to =
watch TV via "traditional" means like CATV (probably not)? And if not, wha=
t are we going to do to meet/mitigate the demands and effects on our bandwi=
dth?

Subject: CATV and internet bandwidth
Greetings,
I've been asked to see what other locations are doing in terms of CableTV a=
nd related internet bandwidth for students.
We currently have a head-end structure with rigid coax between buildings an=
d service from DirecTV. The equipment in place allows us to distribute an a=
nalog signal in standard definition. We are looking to upgrade our setup, a=
nd are considering several options. Does anyone still have a head-end struc=
ture? Do you get service from the internet or satellite? If by internet, th=
en how much bandwidth is this consuming? Do you offer HD services to studen=
ts? Do you distribute internally via ethernet or coax?
I assume others, like us, have seen a rise in internet offerings such as Ne=
tFlix and Hulu for student entertainment. Has this caused a noticeable incr=
ease in traffic? Does anyone shape this traffic, only allow it during certa=
in times, or is your bandwidth sufficient enough to handle the traffic?
Any comments or insights would be appreciated.
Thanks!
James Ellis
