Subject: Re: [andy_roo@MIT.EDU: Re: AT1700 Cards]

When looking at cards, we (primarily me) looked at NE2000 compatibles,
as it was thought that these would give the best price and
compatibility. Of the bunch we looked at, Allied Telesis' AT2000 looked
as it had the best compatiblity, especially in regards to Linux. When
talking to Allied Telesis, they told us about their newer cards, the
at1500 and at1700. We looked at both, and decided on the 1700 as it has
simpler setup (didn't require a DMA channel as does the 1500).
Regarding speed, Allied Telesis didn't feel that there would be
appreciable difference for client applications. On the Linux side,
initially neither card worked for me, although after some discussion
with Donald Becker (becker@super.org) I got the at1700 running. While
Linux support may still have problems (which should be refered to
Becker), I still feel that this is a perfectly acceptable solution for
the DOS/Windows side.
