That was actually something I could not understand at the time, as dealer cost from Merisel
for 1 unit of the 3C509 is $119 (or at least was a few months ago). One would assume that
with the number that the MCC must have purchased, a substantial discount would have
probably been in order. Anyways, the AT1700 has worked for me so far without a hitch other
than suspicions about speed.
As for bri's note, I believe you're slightly in error regarding AT1700. It may be the case that
you haven't heard of them, but like you said, they are huge in the network hardware market,
and have been making some pretty fast cards for quite some time. At least when I was
selling computers in the 1987-1991 years, I saw a fair number of Allied Telesis cards moving
around. Anyways, no one probably heard of the AT1700 because it was released not too long
ago. I flipped around and Windows 3.1 has support for the AT1500 (if that means anything...)
and a couple people I queried back at home tend to use them for network installation,
especially when they are buying lots of AT hardware anyways.
Bri, I'm not dragging anyone into anything. The point of it isn't a dispute. It's simply that
weakly substantiated claims or flames about the card performance aren't too helpful. A poll
isn't going to accomplish anything but to clutter this mailing list (which, I suppose we're
doing a pretty good job of, but it's relevant) I'd be really interested if other people had
numbers for transfer speeds over different connections for different cards, that would be
helpful.
While we're on the point, is there perhaps any chance that RCC's will be trained on how this
hardware operates beyond simply giving us rather dire warnings that other cards aren't
supported??? That's not to lump them all together or to aim at anyone in particular, it would
just be more helpful to us, the endusers. Thanks a bunch.
