Okay, I went back and played around with a couple different file transfers a few minutes ago,
at 3:45 am, tried each file 3 times, results are:
file transfer, 400K file, from mccdec1.mit.edu -> about 240-250 kB/s
file transfer, 1115K file, from ftp.microsoft.com -> 10-15 kB/s
file transfer, 200K file, from oak.oakland.edu -> 10-12 kB/s
file transfer, 150K file, from ftp.cica.indiana.edu -> 10-15 kB/s
file transfer, 110K file, from undisclosable (beta testing) site, milnet -> about 2-3 kB/s
I guess life starts to stink once you get off of mit onto the rest of the Internet. Kinda curious
that com isn't slower than edu, either Microsoft has got something really fast as a server (big
surprise), or there isn't much difference (although oak and cica tend to get tons of traffic), as
for the mil, I think that may actually be a private workstation, wasn't expecting great speed
(hey, it's the government we're talking about here!).
Anyways, that's about it for my completely non-scientific excusion. Nice to know it's not the
card, or at least, is 250 kB/s pretty typical for inter-MIT transfers?
