I can assert that the installation for the 3Com 3c509 that I installed
last night was trivial. It was ready for use once I stuck the card into
its slot; the only change I made was to optimize its onboard drivers for
windows.
The DOS/Windows software MIT has provided for use on resnet had the
card on its list of supported drivers. And my own 3c509 in my Linux
machine was completely plug-and-play....
I don't think the SMC card could be any easier to install than the 3c509.
I'd be speaking in support of other brands of ethercards, but I have no
personal experience with them.
