Two solutions that I know:
1) Uncheck the checkbox that says "Determine if file / directory by ..."
This will make everything appear the way it should, more or less. The major
drawback: it's really really slow [unless ftp.uwp.edu [or wherever the site
is] is really hosed].
2) Use the FTP program given with LWP for DOS. I think it's even stable from
within Windows. Unfortunately, you don't get the neat UI.
