We're having the same quandary at this time.
I have spent thousands of dollars using pretty much every passive approach
that could be conceived, in trying to get the students to use the Virus
protection that the school provides for them.
We have discussed a number of more aggressive approaches, including tying
the resnetreg database to the virus protection reg database so students
would not be able to register on the network, until they have registered and
installed the virus protection.
We have even talked about bundling virus protection with other software
using InstallSheild, and installing it without them knowing. But this had
some technical draw backs, not to mention it was just a little sneaky :)
Problem being, as a public institution the word "aggressive" is not well
received when dealing with the student body, or faculty for that matter.
"Campaign" is much more popular, but not nearly as effective or efficient
and usually cost much, much more money.
If you find something "non-aggressive" that works, please let me know.

Gustavus Adolphus College is a residential college with about 2400
students. Our dorms are wired with 1 port per pillow. A large number
of our students bring their own computers to campus.
When a student plugs their computer into the network for the first time,
they get an IP address that redirects them to a registration web page
when they try to view an off-campus site. They must complete the
registration process to receive a fully functional IP address.
The College owns a site license for Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition
that allows us to distribute it to our students for use on their
personal machine. We would like to ensure that they have the Corporate
Edition of Norton installed before we allow them to register their
computer.
One idea that we have is to run a script that determines whether or not
they have our version of Norton installed before letting them register.
Ideally, this script would uninstall any other virus protection, install
Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and then take them to our
registration page.
Does anyone have any experience with this approach?
