CSU, Chico has had Assistive Technology labs available for some time
including Kurzweil 3000 (generally used by students with learning
disabilities to help them read), Kurzweil 1000 & Openbook (competing
products to scan in text and verbally read it to vision-impaired students,
Dragon (allows students to verbally dictate and have it transcribed into
text -- also allows them to navigate within the windows environment), JAWS &
WindowEyes (screen readers that allow a visually-impaired person navigate
and read documents), etc. However, the campus is (finally) putting together
an accessibility standard for all computer labs across campus. From what I
have seen of it so far, it is going to be more of wheelchair accessibility,
standard OS accessibility features (screen magnifier, stickykeys, etc) and
the like that specialized software in every lab.

Our assistive technology facilities are run by the Student Computing
organization (It's one of those "other duties as assigned" of the ResNet
Coordinator). Our DSS organization approves students for access to the
facility and refer them to me for training in how to use the assistive apps.
I work closely with DSS when planning changes to the facilities, software,
etc.

Subject: Special Needs

Good Morning All,

I know this question is beyond the scope of resnet but I am certain many of
us have encountered students with special needs - either connecting in the
resident halls or using campus computing.

I am specifically interested in any adaptive technology resources, products,
services or policies that you have in place. We are expanding the offerings
of adaptive technology resources to meet student needs and proactively
comply with ADA requirements. I know as more applications, services move to
a web based environment the traditional demands for those with special needs
will increase.

Thanks for your time,
Anne
