We have appr. 33 buildings wired at the moment. Number of rooms ranging from
40 to 130. Every building has its own port on an ethernet switch. The
buildings are grouped in 3 separate "districts". Every district has its own
port on another switch that also services 3 more buildings. We use Cabletron
stackable HUB's and Cabletron switches. They cost around Hfl 20000.
Considering exchange rates and reseller profits they should be under $10000.
The main switch is a chassis with some ESXMIM's (fiber) and the district
switches are ESX820, fully stuffed with fiber ports. Allthough the ESXMIM is
more expensive we decided to use that one as our main switch because of the
extra possibilities that one offers over the ESX820.
The first connection dates from january 13, 1995 and at the moment we have 50
students connected. Those 50 all live in the district (of 600 rooms) that was
ready in january. At the moment we are connecting the equipment in the other
disctricts.
We should be able to get 10% connected after two months of operation. How it
will go after that, we don't know.
The only problem we had is somebody cutting all cable in one building...
