Dane's last post brought me back to one of our stickiest problems...
We've been doing PC networking for 9 years in offices, etc., and have had
Macs on a dorm network for 4 (we have perhaps 900 connected Macs, most on
Ethertalk). So far it's gone pretty well.
We know technically _how_ to network PCs, but we can't seem to find a way
to open up the dorm net to DOS compatibles in a fashion that is MANAGEABLE,
i.e., without chewing up scare staff time. We work student assistants
already for Mac support, but the PC problems seem to exceed their tool set.
A posting on this topic by a friend to the small college consortium
discussion group got only a handful of responses, all of which said "Yes,
big pain in the butt, wish they would go away". Well, they ain't goin'
away!
Hence, more questions:
How many PCs are on your nets? ( & how many Macs?)
What are current policies with regard to student owned DOS/Windows compatibles?
Do you advertise that DOS/Windows machines can be put on the network?
Are DOS/Windows machines fulled supported (IP & LAN connectivity)?
Do you limit the makes & models of DOS/Windows machines that can be connected?
Do you limit machine types (ex., 386 or better with minimum 8 megs of RAM)?
Do you limit OS types (ex., only Windows for Workgroups v3.11, etc.)?
**Other brilliant ideas?
I'll summarize any e-mail posts I get. I have to do a discussion group on
this topic in a couple of weeks at NERCOMP, a New England regional
conference of Folks Like Us. I'll report back, of course, but please send
me off with some fresh ideas!
