At Washington University in St. Louis we have a series of 24Hr computer
clusters in our residence halls. Every resident has access to a cluster
either in their building or the one next door (we are working to make
them in every building). We try to build on the "community" aspect of
each building that the floor RAs start each year and present the computer
cluster as "their" computer lab. We use the RCC concept developed at
Stanford (shameless plug for Jeff) and have one in most buildings, even
those without a computer cluster directly in their buidling. All of the
freshman halls have an RCC, some of the upper class halls share.

Each of our clusters has a combination of Macs, PCs and laserprinting
(free). The clusters are all networked. Each student room has an
information connection that includes all new level-5 RJ-45 jacks,
cable-tv, and phone lines.

We also provide some centralized help and tech support.

Security (didn't think I'd get to it, eh?): All of our equipment is
locked down with the standard sort of cable - the CPUs, monitors and
printers. Over the last 6 years we have had two computers stolen and
maybe a handful of mice. No keyboards and very little vandalism. The
computers were stolen during weekends when most or the population was not
around. Now, we deadbolt the clusters over the breaks when most of the
halls population will be gone. Not often, but... Often, when a mouse
gets stolen, another mouse shows up to take its place. We don't replace
stuff like right away and our students know it.
