I would say that your risk of theft is probably high. Our campus uses
alarms on the doors as well as motion detectors in the rooms. The motion
detectors were implemented after thieves circumvented the door by climbing
over a wall and crawling through a suspended ceiling. We also cable the
equipment to the desks.

Perhaps you can implement a monitoring system with electronic keys or cards
that student must use to enter the room of the 24 hr lab. Each unique
electronic key would be registered to a specific student. Electronic
monitoring would show when a student entered the lab. This would discourage
theft because the student could be placed at the scene of the crime.
