I thought some of you who read the forum might find this NERCOMP (New
England Computing) Special Interest Group information of interest. We'll
be doing a one day User Services SIG at Wellesley on March 3. We are
looking for speakers, case studies, etc. as detailed below. The close date
for proposals is 1/19/95.
NERCOMP member schools will be receiving registration forms etc. at the end
of January. For those who are not member schools, if you aren't interested
in speaking etc., but would be interested, let me know by email and I'll
forward the information.
Those of you who attended ResNet 94 will think this looks somewhat familiar
on the topics etc. Thanks to Jeff and ResNet 94 staff for the original
ideas....
Thanks,
Pattie Orr

NERCOMP User Services SIG
A Port for Every Pillow: Supporting Residential Computing
March 3, 1995
Wellesley College
Wellesley, Massachusetts
Call for Speaker Participation
Colleges and universities throughout the country are paving the way for the
"Information Superhighway" to reach students where they live. Most of the
discussion of residential computing has revolved around pulling wire and
retrofitting the residence halls. Although that is no small task, it is the
support of these new environments which will be the challenge of the 90's.
How can user services support users in such diverse locations?
Which services should be provided and can they be delivered around the clock?
Is it possible to train student consultants to troubleshoot and maintain
residential connections?
This conference is designed to bring together those who plan, implement, and
support residential information technologies, such as in-room networking,
residence-based computer clusters and video technologies. Many aspects of such
services will be addressed through case studies, topic presentations, and focus
group discussions.
We are soliciting speakers for four types of sessions:
Case Study - describe your Residential networking project from start to
finish with primary emphasis on "people issues" and user
support. (35 minutes with 10 minutes for questions)
Discussion Leader - present the issues underlying a particular topic and then
lead a discussion with the audience
(15 minutes with 30 minute discussion)
Topic Speaker - make a presentation on a particular topic (20 to 30 minutes)
Student Forum- college students who are currently serving as residential
computing consultants will serve on a panel to discuss support issues and will
participate in lunch discussion topics. Students who participate will also
have an opportunity to tour the Wellesley College computing facilities and to
have a student brainstorm session on support concerns and strategies. We
think this will add a new dimension to our SIG. Since residential computing
is in essence a student support topic, we would like to include some students
involved in direct residential support in our SIG. If you have an outstanding
student consultant, consider encouraging him/her to participate.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Printing services Software services
Support issues Video services
Security Training Consultants
Privacy and ethics Network management
Leasing programs Residential programming
Computer Clusters Policy issues
Documentation Initial Installations
Library Services Instructional Support
***DEADLINE for speaker proposals is January 19, 1995***
