I am very interested in gathering information from any sites that
(currently do/plan to/have chosen not to) offer SLIP or PPP access to
faculty/staff/students and possibly to their local communities.
It may be a good way to get users on the network but I can see at least
a few stumbling blocks (authentication and usage accounting come to mind).
1) Current status: ____ Offer it _X___ Plan to ____ On hold
2) Who's connected: ____ Faculty ____ Staff ____ Students ___ Others
3) Number of ports: ____ Today _12___ Spr 95 ____ Fall 95
4) Whose access server? starting investigation Modems?
5) What authentication server? starting investigation
6) Comments: We've had limited requests (25) for PPP/SLIP access.
We're concerned about line campers, charging schemes, and
user support. The local phone company is starting to implement
ISDN so I'm looking at more exotic solutions with better
management and authentication than simple modem pools and
terminal servers. It would also be nice to have one incoming
T1 line that multiplexes the incoming calls. Ascend Communications
offers a line of products that I'm looking at that is very
attractive but I haven't dicussed pricing yet and I fear what
I'm going to find out :-)
Fall 95 may have quite a few more lines implemented if the ISDN
tests and product evaluations and pricing are favorable.
Please send me your summary.

I'll gladly summarize if I get any responses. Thanks so much.
