It is really just an architecture issue, not wifi specific. I posted about this earlier. Games hate NAT, even one-to-one, and firewall issues. We're thinking of changing our device network to public IP's and doing less heavy firewall rules on it and more just IPS and pattern matching protection.

Andy,
Who is tour Wi-Fi vendor and what issues with gaming are you seeing? We are seeing no issues with gaming on our Aruba system if the SSID speeds are set properly. The matest issue we had was tweaking the speeds for the latest Xbox 360 model.

.... Once we solve some issues with gaming I think students will request less wired ports. I still advocate installing multiple wires to every room when building though, even if you don't connect it. Providing a wired port on a request basis only saved us a half million dollars in the switch refresh and enabled us to get better access points with higher density.

As a follow on to this question, for those of you running wireless-only residence halls, what is your average AP density? Are AP's in the halls or rooms? In general, how many rooms are served by a single AP? Obviously, some of those answers are dependent on building construction, just trying to get an idea of what others are doing...

While we have not been transitioning to wifi-only buildings, I will say that we have been purchasing cheaper used networking equipment instead of brand new switches for student housing locations. The utilization of the wired infrastructure by students just does not warrant the cost of new equipment. Of course, this does not take into consieration the cost of pulling wire, but it is always cheaper to pull it during construction than afterwards, should it be needed in the future for one reason or another.
I do like the idea of setting up lounges with the ability to accomodate gaming.
