I'm resurrecting this thread as we are having PON recommended as a possible option for new building construction.

Sounds like there was a recent installation at WSU that some people really liked and reddit finds interesting.

Our architect's RCDD has scheduled a dog and pony show with Zhone for later this week. I'm always interested in learning something new, but I have to say I'm skeptical due to the reasons pointed out in the earlier thread (distributing emergency power for WiFi vs IDF emergency power for POE, lots of what seem a lot like tiny IDFs to manage, yet another technology to learn and manage).

Just curious if anyone has any recent experience with PON (or Zhone) in residence halls that they'd like to share.

Thanks,

I manage dozens of PONs as part of my $DAYJOB. The advantage of GPON is that there are some vendors (i.e.) that provide an RF (and return) over GPON solution. But if you don't need RF, I would just for ActiveE (GigE). In the future you'll find that 2.4 Gbps is not enough for a 32 or 64-way split.

Has anyone looked into PON technology to provide services to their residence halls? Our campus just went through a master planning process, out of which one of the recommendations was to use PON technology to deliver data and video services to on-campus residents. It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure its a good fit for our campus. Just wondering if anyone else has researched/piloted/put into production any PON technology?

Thanks,
