Indiana State University is a "laptop campus" (students are required to hav=
e laptops). Incoming freshman meeting a minimal high school GPA are offered=
a "scholarship laptop" and those who do not qualify are charged as part of=
their tuition. The university goes through a process of choosing a vendor =
once a contract expires. I am not 100% sure on the details of this process =
but I do know we have used Dell and Lenovo in the past and recently ran in =
to some issues with Lenovo. This year they are looking at Dell and HP. Depe=
nding on the company and contract there are variations of support and warra=
nties offered but the walk in help desk usually does the hardware repairs. =
ISU OIT images all laptops and they are handed out during move-in week. We =
also have a "rent to own" program and offer rentals to students whose lapto=
ps are being worked on.

WCU is planning to switch to a university wide laptop requirement beginning=
in Fall 2018. We've had a university computer requirement for many years =
that is based off hardware specs rather than any particular vendor. The la=
ptop requirement is still being developed, but I imagine it will also be sp=
ec based. We run Apple and Dell certified repair centers, and encourage st=
udents to purchase from one of the two, but there is no requirement to do s=
o. Some colleges (engineering comes to mind) have departmental computer re=
quirements that go above and beyond the standard university requirement. I=
imagine some of those specify an OS, but I doubt they require purchase fro=

Subject: Requiring Students to Have Laptops
The School of Business here is pushing to require their students to have la=
ptops. The policy they sent us for review does not require specific laptops=
or brands, only that they have Windows available (including on a Boot Camp=
partition on a Mac). So I'm curious if there are any schools out there wit=
h laptop ownership requirements with similar policies or with policies that=
include a laptop program (like you must purchase specific laptops from a s=
pecific vendor). Any information about these types of policies would help. =
This is the college's first foray into requiring students to own a computer=
.
Thanks,
Jim
