Hi Stephen,
We have a mostly open guest network at Bucknell - there's a splash page
where you have to accept a user's agreement (with no identification), some
limit of bandwidth, a couple of streaming services blocked (like Netflix),
no access to university services like printing or network space, and every
4 hours, there's a popup where you have to again do the user's agreement.
Our general counsel appears to be fine with that, and since we don't
collect any data, our security chief is comfortable that we don't have any
responsibility, since there's no way to track down usage to an individual.
We've regularly prompted him with suggestions about changing the guest
access - since we use SafeConnect, they have a guest portal that would
offer access with some level of tracking - but he has repeatedly insisted
that we don't need to go there.
It seems crazy time-intensive to have to have an employee do something for
every person who wants to access a guest network - parents, visitors,
speakers, etc.
