We have a handful of stations near some student services offices that are u=
sed for quick transactions and were constantly either being left unattended=
with the student logged into something sensitive (i.e. their financial aid=
award info) or locked interminably.
We used a powershell script to detect mouse or keyboard activity and start =
a countdown the moment the input devices went idle. After 5 minutes of inac=
tivity, it restarts the station.

Subject: public cluster / screen locks/timeouts
Hi -
I've been asked to allow students to be able to lock the screen in our publ=
ic computing facilities so that if they step away from a computer their ses=
sions will be secured. However, I have concerns that this may end up with =
machines that are locked for long periods of time, resulting in less availa=
ble computers for students when they need it.
If we allow them to lock the screen, then I'd want a way to have someone be=
able to unlock it after a certain duration. So, for example, you could lo=
ck your screen for 10 minutes, but after that it could either be unlocked b=
y anyone or automatically logged off (which adds the additional challenge o=
f what do you do if they have open documents that aren't saved?)
Does anyone have any policies/procedures/ideas about this?
Thanks,
-Lori
