Our campus has done some of this over the past few years. We had many of th=
e same issues. Here our how are numbers are working....
Wired Ports
- 1 Wired Port per Pillow
- Active jacks on the switch 1 per room (Typically the A Jack). Wi=
th 20% overage of available ports.
- Math =3D 200 Beds =3D 100 Rooms =3D100 Active connections and 2=
0 available ports available for on request we need 2 jacks. So switches tha=
t do 120 ports at a minimum plus AP, etc.
- We went this route because we found that many people are bringin=
g smart TV / Consoles etc. that have a wired connection. While Laptop and e=
verything else are Wi-Fi we still have our Gamers who want a wired connecti=
on too. So we went up the middle on 1 always active as a convenience factor=
. If they have to take a test and think the Wi-Fi is questionable we recomm=
end to plug in to the wired port.
Wi-Fi
- We are about 1 AP for every 3 or 4 rooms. Varies from in rooms t=
o down the hall, mostly based on how the building is laid out. We try to pl=
an for -67db signal strength or better. So your number Seems about right.
- You could put 1 AP under every coffee cup as a heater and they w=
ould still say it is terrible. But that is the Enterprise Wi-Fi vs. Home Wi=
-Fi challenge.
- We are pulling 2 CAT6A runs to our Access points for future proo=
fing. May look at a DAS or the next 802.11 thing to come out.
POTS
- We will have them wire 1 pots line to every room. Mostly for ADA=
needs (Bed shakers, Flashers etc.). Other than that we have nearly 0 phone=
s in rooms. We have great Cell Coverage in most of our facilities.
- We do have few POTS call boxes in the hall ways of every floor i=
n the residences, Push the button and it auto dials 911 full 2 way conversa=
tion.
CATV
- We more or less provide our own CATV and since a lot of people h=
ave TVs they use them (It contracted with Time Warner for the feed but we m=
ake it happen on campus), but we are looking at a IP based solution potenti=
ally for next fall.
Wiring:
- Our standard is CAT6A for everything twisted pair. WE use Rj45 j=
acks for phones and networking, the phone jacks are Blue and the network ja=
cks are variations of neutral colors depending on the building. We try to h=
ave everything run to 1 IDF location or a minimal number of locations based=
on cable lengths. One building is over 300' long and 5 stories so it requi=
red 2 IDFS while another is 13 stories and we have 1 IDF on the 7th floor.
Power:
- We also standardize on 1 L6-30 power connection for every rack o=
f equipment (5 switches with 740W power supplies comes in at 3000W and most=
UPS can only do 4400w.... With the outlet on Generator power. We then put =
a 5K UPS at 208v with a PDU on the generator circuit with minimal battery, =
the theory is that if we go dark the UPS can cover the conversion until the=
Generator kicks in. We used to use 2 L6-30 connections one commercial and =
one generator with an ATS PDU. The ATS would connect to the commercial feed=
and the other side to the UPS which is connected to the Generator. We foun=
d that the additional cost of the ATS based PDU wasn't really worth it and =
we rarely found the advantage of being able to toggle input power sources t=
o service the UPS etc.
Fiber:
- If you are looking to have internal building runs use OM4 Multim=
ode it can go 400M at 10 G. Single mode still rocks up to 10G with no probl=
em. But SR for OM4 optics are about 1/3 the cost of LR optics for Single mo=
de. So IDF to IDF if the distance can handle it consider that an option.

We then put a 5K UPS at 208v with a PDU on the generator circuit with mini=

an ATS PDU. The ATS would connect to the commercial feed and the other sid=
