We've been running nagios for years, and it works just fine for our own
internal monitoring. I've often thought, since it has the data, it should
be a good resource that could automatically list the status of services for
end users, or at least the Help Desk. The problem is that there are lots
of things that are good to monitor and be concerned about before they
become a problem, but that don't represent a problem to the end user. For
example, maybe the disk on a server has just reached 90% full, so it'd be a
good idea for me as the sys admin to look if there is space that could be
freed up, check if logs are getting rotated correctly, etc. That makes a
service check in nagios turn red, but it doesn't represent a problem to the
end user of the system. Network equipment wise maybe 1 power supply or 1
fan on a switch has gone bad but it has multiple, so once again something
that should be looked at before it becomes a bigger problem, but it doesn't
mean the network is down from an end user perspective.
I've not built an end user status page, but have come to the conclusion
that I'd want to build it separately from the monitoring system used by the
network and systems staff to try to avoid issues like this.
