In response to my posting last month to 2 lists (RESNET and SCUSS), I
received info about 21 schools regarding their position on mandates for
computer ownership:
10 schools were not actively considering a requirement.
7 schools were more or less actively considering a mandate for ownership
(count Trinity College here, for a total of 8)
4 schools already required ownership. Of these,
Dartmouth leans towards Mac (in a grand way), and
Drew requires a DOS-based laptop.
University of Vermont's programs in Engineering and
Computer Science, Math, and Business Administration
require DOS machines.
Wake Forest's MBA program includes Apple Powerbooks
as part of the tuition.

In some respects, it was a silly survey. The numbers are impossible to
interpret, given the exquisitely self-selected sample.
Nonetheless, we know for sure that 11 of our peers either require ownership
or are considering it. Given the number of people who generally contribute
to these two lists in the course of a week, and given the enormous
implications of required ownership, that "11" looks like a pretty sizeable
number to me.
In a nutshell, the voters wanted change. Ooops, wrong script.
Thank you.
That is all.
