Central wireless is different than what was presented as having an "inexpen=

There is a central enterprise system; it=92s just not yours, it=92s the pho=
ne company=92s.
We do this (Verizon FiOS), and it works very well from a technology standpo=
int. From Verizon=92s perspective, a dorm is no different than an apartment=
building, and the en-suite equipment is the same they deploy in any other =
high-density residential setting. If this weren=92t a solved problem for th=
em, none of us who live in New York or any other large city would have any =
internet at all=85but we all do.
And as an added bonus, DMCA violation notices go to the teclo, too, and are=
handled on an account-by-account basis.
The only issues we have are around customer service: since it=92s campus ho=
using, the students really want to be able to call Student Life, not Verizo=
n, when they have copyright violations or other issues, so there=92s a litt=
le friction around that, especially at the start of the school year.
And since Verizon views each room as a separate account, it=92s hard for us=
to know when there are outages. Fortunately, there typically aren=92t many=
.

Yes, part of the problem is that even if you scale back the power on the =
=93routers=94 the clients still blast however loud they want, and on shared=
channel space. You also don=92t have much in the way of band steering and=
load balancing. That leads to a lot of inefficiency and poor channel usag=
e. I can appreciate the =93hands-off=94 nature, but I would be concerned a=
bout the quality of experience.

That sounds like an RF nightmare, especially with wireless home routers. Yo=
u really need a central enterprise system to intelligently allocate Rf chan=

We are in the process of designing a new residence hall and of course costs=

network (run by campus IT) does not support game consoles and smart TVs. O=
ur sign in requires username and password while most devices only use passw=

I don't think I have seen anyone talk about the type of solution I saw at t=
he University of New Brunswick in Fredericton when I attended the CANHEIT c=
onference last summer. They have outsourced Internet and phone service in =
their residences to a local telecom, Bell Alliant. Instead of trying to i=
mplement an enterprise style wifi service with WPA2 type authentication, th=
ey treat each residence room as a separate residential home. So in other =
words, each residence room has its own inexpensive personal wifi router wit=
h its own SSID and password. These are low power units as they are really =
only intended to provide coverage within the room they are situated in. E=
ach room only needs one wired connection for the wifi router as additional =
wired devices can be plugged into the four wired ports on the AP. Phone se=
rvice is provided with a VOIP phone plugged into one of the ports on the wi=
fi router. The speed of the Internet connection is superior to what stude=
nts had when they were sharing the campus Internet pipe. Students are prov=
ided with a number to report problems directly to Bell Alliant and I would =
assume this support is available for much larger time period than what woul=
d be provided by a university managed service desk. It was a bit of a surp=
rise to find a wifi router in the residence room I was staying in!
Students don't have a roaming capability, but they would not have that anyw=
ays if they were living off campus.

I don't think I have seen anyone talk about the type of solution I saw at t=
he University of New Brunswick in Fredericton when I attended the CANHEIT c=
onference last summer. They have outsourced Internet and phone servic=
e in their residences to a local telecom,
Bell Alliant. Instead of trying to implement an enterprise sty=
le wifi service with WPA2 type authentication, they treat each residence ro=
om as a separate residential home. So in other words, each resi=
dence room has its own inexpensive personal wifi router
with its own SSID and password. These are low power units as they ar=
e really only intended to provide coverage within the room they are situate=
d in. Each room only needs one wired connection for the wifi ro=
uter as additional wired devices can be plugged
into the four wired ports on the AP. Phone service is provided with =
a VOIP phone plugged into one of the ports on the wifi router. =
The speed of the Internet connection is superior to what students had when =
they were sharing the campus Internet pipe. Students
are provided with a number to report problems directly to Bell Alliant and=
I would assume this support is available for much larger time period than =
what would be provided by a university managed service desk. It was a=
bit of a surprise to find a wifi router
in the residence room I was staying in!

Students don't have a roaming capability, but they would not have that anyw=
ays if they were living off campus.
