Hi everyone,
I am reporting back with our progress and findings - thanks again to those
who provided your input!
We are in the midst of evaluating technical performance and vendor demos,
so we have not seen Christie Brio or Mersive Solstice yet. (Most testing
activity has been put on hold until mid-May as this is the last week of
classes, followed by a week of final exams.)
To put it briefly Kramer VIA was not impressive. Although it was a webinar
demo and not on-site, the group observed that Internet Explorer crashed on
the representative's desktop during the demo for "native Internet access" -
this was surprising and notable considering the product line's price
point. We were most interested it the Campus edition, but he demonstrated
the Collage edition.
Barco ClickShare lived up to its excellent reputation, as some of our IT
staff and Library faculty had seen it used at other institutions and all
had a good impression of it. I quickly received a response from a
knowledgeable and local reseller representative based when I emailed Barco
for more information. He brought along a local AV consultant when he came
to campus to demo the CSE-200 product in case their were technical AV
questions he could not answer, and they were able to answer everything we
asked. The CSE-200 just has a power adapter and a DisplayPort connection,
so it creates an ad-hoc SSID. The network team was able to register the
device on our network quickly and explore all of the configuration options
they could think of in less than the 1 hour of time allotted for the
on-site demo (assign IP, adjust channel, adjust broadcast range as needed
to mitigate overlap, log on to web interface management console, can
broadcast at 5.0GHz frequency, 3 levels of security to select). Testing on
Windows 7 (HP laptop), Windows 8 (Surface tablet), iOS (iPhone and iPad
Mini using AirPlay displayed the best), and Mac OS X (10.10 and 10.11) all
worked very quickly and well. The ease of use is a bona fide plus. The
CSE-200 has DisplayPort outputs (we used a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter as
well), and we did notice about 0.5 to 1.0 seconds of lag with the laptops,
but connecting the USB dongle worked every time. The last person to "join"
will get kicked off by the next person to join, but the product will be
adding a feature to moderate this behavior if desired. Free updates (new
features come in the form of firmware updates) are available for as long as
you own the product, and these can be centrally managed also. The
representative also brought along a CSC-1 model, but we did not connect or
test it (requires Ethernet connection).
We purchased a Prijector unit because it was relatively cheap (under $300).
I have not personally used it yet, but a couple of my team members said it
was very easy to set up and use, and looks like a promising competitor.
Licenses for Mirroring360 and AirServer have also been ordered for testing.
WePresent (WiPG-2000) and Extron (Sharelink 200 & InFocus Lite Show)
require further investigation.
Our network team is considering an Aruba ClearPass implementation for
wireless (and some others), and so far we have not seen any show-stoppers
with these products under consideration for wireless projection/display.
