We're doing some research into tools and best practices for managing our
server environment, specifically related to auditing hardware and software,
performance monitoring, and OS and application patching. Like most
institutions, we have a mix of physical and virtual servers.

I had posted a similar question a few weeks ago about client management
tools (e.g., LANDesk, Dell KACE) -- many thanks for your responses! We
just want to focus in specifically on how you manage server environments to
help provide a little further clarity.

   - What tools and/or best practices do you use at your school to manage
   your server environment?
   - If you're using an agent-based solution, have you experienced any
impacts to server and/or service performance?
   - Do these solutions apply to all servers, or is there a subset of
servers that are excluded or held to different management practices?

Thanks for any information you can share! It's really helpful to us.

Karen
