We've also just thrown up outdoor cameras (mostly Axis PTZ, but usually
fixed position once decided) and just put a caching proxy on a web server.
We've always done wired, as even for the one not near existing connections
we needed to provide network connectivity to the construction trailer
anyways.
We did try a Dropcam as a semi-indoor option recently. It worked OK
(although had to contact support to turn off the image branding), but the
camera died right about when the project finished. That's probably more the
fault of our not-within-install-guidelines usage (they're designed for
inside homes, not construction zones) than the product itself. It ended up
with a couple 48hr suddenly-offline->foreman->facilities->me->reinstall
trips due to last minute scheduling changes after they supposedly weren't
going to be working near the mount point soon. Those are with it being
placed at the request of the person managing the project (trying to get
more interesting action after the outside was up), so I'd recommend
placement locations outside the work zone if possible.
I've used cron as well for capturing timelapse of the projects. For short
times just grabbing regular images and sorting it out later is fine. For
multi-year projects a little thinking through the daylight times and/or the
type of time arc wanted on results (just multiples each day repeatedly is
often sub-optimal from a lighting/shadow perspective, is a "single day"
view desired, multiple "days" of x weeks, just mid-day) is probably good to
cut down on storage requirements. Alternatively I've done a rolling 2-week
capture of everything to allow grabbing detail of interesting things
(someone has to keep on top of that) while keeping only select captures for
the entire project.
