At the University of Dayton, we are exploring options to implement a client
management tool (e.g., Dell KACE, LANDesk) to help us manage and automate
tasks around things like patching, inventory (hardware and software),
software distribution and metering, remote control, etc. While we're most
focused on managing desktops for our 2500 faculty and staff, there's some
strong interest in using this for servers as well.

We are in the process of rolling out Active Directory and there has been
some discussion around SCCM; however, about 20% of our desktop hardware and
a sizeable chunk of our server hardware is non-Windows. Ideally, we'd
prefer one tool to manage Windows and non-Windows.

For those of you who have implemented (or at least investigated) a CMT --
tell us everything! Ok, well, please at least tell us a few things.

1. What tool(s) are you using? If you are using separate tools for
Windows and non-Windows hardware, what are the benefits/challenges of using
multiple tools?
2. What do you use the tool(s) for?
3. Within your organization, where does usage/ownership/management of your
tool fall? What resources (people, skill sets, time, etc.) is needed to
use/manage the tool?
5. How do you manage similar services for "other" systems? For example,
we don't expect to manage student-owned machines, but there are elements of
software inventory/metering that we still need to track.
6. Do you have any documentation, web pages, and/or other resources that
you're willing to share? For example, your tool requirements list, RFP,
selection process, communication strategies, related governance/policies,
etc.
7. Any lessons learned that you can share?

Thanks for any info you can share!

Karen
