The basic problem is that, unlike Macs speaking Appletalk and its
native printing protocol, PCs running DOS/Windows have no such universal
standard for sharing printers. Printer sharing is a software add-on:
install Windows for Workgroups and speak netbios or tcp/ip? install
Lantastic and do its thing over netbios or ipx? install NetWare client
software and have everybody print through Novell servers? (PS. You have
to "control" file sharing as well as printer sharing with all these
approaches; and you get to pay for the privilege).
I might be inclined, if I could standardize on supporting only Windows
and OS/2, to use LPR from the micros, spool through a Unix machine, and use
printers which either speak both TCP/IP and Appletalk, or connect
printers to the network via print servers (e.g. Axis) which can speak TCP
and Appletalk.
