We are beginning to get requests for 3D printing, and I was wondering how other schools are handling this demand, if at all. Currently we're outsourcing to a private company, but ultimately we'd like to have a printer here on campus. I'd be interested in costs for materials, what department houses and maintains the printer, how it's charged back, and any issues and/or tips you may have.

Not directly related to any posts about SSIDs. . .
I recently heard a talk about HotSpot 2.0. While this doesn't replace
SSIDs, it does relegate them to lesser importance. What if every time you
opened your cell phone you had to choose from a long list of service
providers before you could make a call? Not very functional. But that is
what we often get to do with WiFi. This is a plan to change that.

Subject: Re: Imaging or Ghosting Software
We're using Windows Deployment Services, and it works really well. We no
longer have to create different images for each model of computer, since
WDS can append drivers to your images separately.
Combined with PXE booting and a 'lookup file/script' anyone with proper
credentials can reimage a machine in the field without needing boot media
or additional interaction after clicking 'go'.

Hi Everyone:
There's lots of talk lately on our campus about ITIL and implementing some of the ITIL principles. Who out there is using ITIL in their operations? Are there a group of you who would consider submitting a panel proposal for the Student Technology Conference? I'd be happy to organize the session if I can get enough volunteers to sit on the panel.
Can you help?

Hi Cheryl/Jim,
We're starting an implementation at MIT and have had some success with introducing the principles through a few grass-roots efforts that are don't require a huge investment or immediate workflow/culture change. I'd be happy to share some of those experiences.
We're far from having a full ITIL implementation, but are headed there. The work so far has gone a long way to help some of our department understand the concepts and potential benefits.

From: Andy Voelker <avoelker@email.wcu.edu>
Subject: Reasons you should propose a session at the Student Technology Conference
1. Hosting a session is a great way to start conversations. Once you present your topic plenty of people will give feedback, offer their point of view, encourage you, and build collaboration. Most of us will agree that these conversations are what makes conferences valuable. If you haven't seen anyone starting conversations on your topic, the best way to do that is to start it yourself. You don't have to know everything or have infinite success. You can even just host a structured discussion (for example... "How to attract students to workshops" or "What to replace workshops with since they are dead"). By the way... I'd love to see these.
2. Having a proposal accepted offers more security that your employer will send you to the conference. It offers the employer bragging rights, prestige, and Universities are all about prestige! They like to show off the fact that you did a presentation or gave a lecture. Also, remember that we are at Purdue. All you small colleges (like mine) like to be able to say that their IT staff gave presentations at Purdue. Trust me, it works.
3. It gives you bragging rights too. This is just another thing you can put on your resume or CV or LinkedIn profile. Most performance evaluations have a section for "professional development" and attending a conference, sharing your experience, and starting conversations satisfies that category nicely.
4. It builds connections for future conversations. I have Resnet people on LinkedIn, Facebook, and email contacts so if I run into something, I know I can get some input from them. They say that business is about connections... giving a presentations or leading a discussion hands them to you on a magnetic cobalt alloy platter.... I mean silver.
5. Because what you get out of this conference is determined by what you put in. The sessions are the main event at this conference, so without your proposals it just wouldn't be the same!
The deadline for submission is April 13th! Submit today!

Same here. We've had some implementation of ITIL because our ticketing system (Cherwell) is very heavily based on its principals. We've had some major successes and some major problems.
On the same note, is anyone heavily subscribing to HDI? Our helpdesk is being honored in Las Vegas this year because of our survey metrics. That has been a very good addition to our process.

That's REALLY interesting! We use WebHelpDesk in the residence environment, but central IST uses RT.
There's an initiative on campus to replace RT, but WHD doesn't meet our provincial accessibility requirements, so they're not being considered for the campus solution. It's unfortunate...:(

We have three:
"WCU" : main network, students, faculty, staff. It routes to difference vlans depending on classification. This is done by AD group membership.
"WCU Guest" : guest access. For guest lecturers, contractors, parents, etc. Used for conferences and events too. Supplies web internet access only, no on-campus resources that aren't available externally.
"WCU-NetworkSetup" : a captive portal that hosts CloudPath XpressConnect, a configuration tool for 802.1x. Highly recommended if you use 1x. Doesn't solve all your problems, but does a good job.
That being said he have thought about the idea of changing the "WCU" network to a "WCU" and "WCU-HighSpeed" or something similar. The HighSpeed would be a 802.11 N network only on the 5GHz band. It would get more devices that can't make smart decisions about which network to choose on the cleaner, faster band. It would also educate users a little on the capabilities of their devices. Can't you just hear people saying "Well, why can't I see the HighSpeed network?" and your joyful reply of "Didn't you pay $400 for that laptop six years ago? Time for an upgrade." We still have a ton of iPads that, for whatever reason, keep getting on 802.11a and we have no option to change it. We also have tons of PCs that get on N using 2.4, yet are 5GHz capable. Craziness, right?
Thoughts?

The secured wireless authenticates from AD, so we can't push guests

you get a registration portal. We use their guest/contractor
provisioning bits to provide guest / contractor / conference access, and
there are a number of users that can create guests. The new software
allows "self-service" guest account requests, but we haven't explored it
too far yet, it still requires some interaction on the other end. Thus
the -VIP variant, you can just give them the password.
We're looking at integrating the Secure-Setup with the regular UTC
registration portal so we can eliminate that SSID. You don't want too
many beacons (transmitting at low data rates) eating up airtime... plus
the (at least Aruba) overhead of tunneling each SSID back to the
controller separately.
There is the never ending request for "Starbucks" style open access,
just join and go, but so far we have resisted (CALEA et al). If there
was some legal means to validate more open access, we would probably
follow suit.
VIP and eduroam are subject to protocol/port limitations (we followed
the eduroam guidelines for essential services), and we also restrict
their bandwidth. Users (real ones or guests) will migrate to the path
of least resistance, so the easier it is to obtain access, we try to
make the experience suck "just enough" relative to "legitimate" access
to encourage official registration whenever possible.

I guess I should have mentioned that we use CloudPath as well, but it is available as an option on our captive portal that comes up on our tu-guest network.
Also, I should have mentioned that eduroam is a world wide network of educational institutions that allows your faculty, staff and students to connect anywhere eduroam is supported (and vice versa). More info is at eduroam.org<http://eduroam.org>.
If I was just implementing wireless, I would just use eduroam as the SSID for faculty, staff and students and have a guest network for those that can't access eduroam.

Still needing another reason to attend this year's ResNet Student Technology Conference?
What if I told you that by flying into Indianapolis International Airport you will be arriving and departing from what Airport Council International refers to as "the Best Airport in North America." That's right, I said North America!
Other top airports included (by region) were:
Africa: Cape Town
Asia-Pacific: Seoul Incheon
Europe: Moscow Sheremetyevo
Latin America–Caribbean: Cancun
Middle East: Abu Dhabi
And while we can all sit at our desk and dream of a ResNet conference at Cancun, rest assured that as far as airports go we are one in the same!
