We used ghost for 14 years and still have a few areas that are still using=
it, but it has been a dead product for a number of years now in my opinion=
, but was great when maintained.
We started moving to using imagex with a custom GUI when Vista was released=
and that GUI is now in its 4th version, five is in progress. I did a pres=
entation on this at the Student Tech. Conference two years ago in Washingto=
n, I believe the video is still out there.
We just finished implementing the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) in con=
junction with SCCM (which in alphabet soup style turns it into Operating Sy=
stem Deployment, OSD though more commonly called Windows Deployment Service=
s, WDS) I have found it a little slow to build images from scratch but it =
deploys thick images just as fast as any other technology I have used and h=
as the benefit that I can easily configure additional software installs or =
changes if need via the task sequences. Our current environment is SCCM 20=
07 with MDT 2012, we will be upgrading the entire SCCM environment to the l=
atest versions as soon as they finish installing the hardware that came las=
t week. I now use this to create the thick images for the custom tool note=
d above.

We image new computers with Windows Deployment Services. The pros are that =
everything was already included with our Microsoft campus agreement so ther=
e were no additional costs to implement it. It took some time to get everyt=
hing setup just the way we wanted it and learning the ins and outs of syspr=
ep but once everything was worked out things went very smoothly. I was even=
able to create a basic Windows 8 image and include it on our WDS server in=
under two hours.
I know that others on the list use WDS and there have been presentations at=
past ResNet symposiums on the technology so there are a lot of resources h=
ere.
