Hi Jeannie,
Here at UC Berkeley, we broadcast our own RESCOMP (Resnet) wireless SSID. As
the ISP for our residential customers, we need to have a certain amount of
control over both of the wired and wireless networks so that we can properly and
efficiently enforce our policies.
We're also expanding our wireless coverage dramatically this year, where
previously we had it isolated to common areas, as you have. It has been quite
an undertaking but our customers really appreciate having a solid wireless
connection in addition to their wired connection.

We are currently implementing a wireless network through out our Housing facilities we currently only have it in the common areas and the SSID is ResNet wireless so we have always been able to tell the difference between ResNet wireless and the rest of campus wireless ssid. For those of you that have wireless in housing is the ssid name different for the Residence Hall than the main campus.
