At Carnegie-Mellon University we have a dialup pool of v.32bis/v.42bis
modems connected to Annex-3 terminal servers running SLIP with Kerbros
authentication. We will be adding IPX and ARA support on those same
Annex servers shortly.
We also have a CO Lan type setup using proprietary Data Over Voice
modems from Gandalf which connects subscribers from three surrounding
Central Offices up to 64kb/s. Gandalf has since announed that they are
discontinuing support however the service continues to run.
As an alternative we are looking into ISDN services. There are ISDN
fusion proucts that employ a concept called "digital modems". Those
devices can accept a direct ISDN call or an analog modem call. If the
later, it takes the PCM signal, demodulates the pulse coding back into
the anaolog carrier then strips the original data.
