Has anyone had successful discussions around the definition of your
"Internet Service." I think a lot of purse holders are unaware of the huge
change in purpose/scope of the service. When we all got into the Internet
Service business our model and level of service was generally something
like "The service is provided to facilitate your academic success. Any
recreational benefit is a coincidental bonus." Today that equation is
completely flipped (whether people realize it or not) and funding hasn't
generally been adequately adjusted.
Cell phones are a large contributor, too, but Email, IM, TXT, Skype, etc
have completely obviated the need for traditional phone service in
residence halls. Have these saved telecom funds been reallocated to your
bandwidth budget?
Have your closed down campus radio station funds been reallocated to your
bandwidth budget?
Have you ditched satellite and/or dedicated fiber connections for your live
sporting broadcasts? Did your bandwidth budget get augmented to have NBC
Sports backhaul its HD broadcast over your network?
Has your library stopped or slowed down its purchase of popular DVDs in
response to streaming services? Did your bandwidth budget get the savings?
Ditto for their savings on serials and books.
Has streaming video encouraged your ResLife office to kill premium movie
cable channels? Did your bandwidth budget get augmented?
Streaming video isn't going to kill cable TV for a while. Are your ResLife
offices prepared to fund two "cable" systems by augmenting the bandwidth
budget.
This is really just scratching the surface. How do you manage the
expectations of the incoming student who is leaving a 45Mb home connection?
Yikes.
